One of the easiest combinations to land on any slot machine is the scatter symbol. It has rules of its own whereby these symbols are not tied down to a pay line and neither do they have to abide by the rules that apply to symbol combinations.

This is known as the easiest symbol combination to land on any slot that uses scatters. The reason for this is because of the rules that apply to the way scatter symbols work.

Here are some general rules about scatter symbols:

  • Scatter symbols do not have start from reel 1
  • Scatter symbols are not tied to a pay line
  • Scatter symbols can be anywhere in view to count as a win
  • Scatter symbols pay multiples of your entire spin bet
  • Scatter symbols can be used to trigger a bonus of free spins round

Scatter symbols do not have start from reel 1

With scatter symbols, there are different rules compared to regular slot symbols. Regular slot symbols must begin on reel 1, and after this, there must be another symbol on adjacent reels. For example, a regular 3 symbol combination will only count if the symbol starts on reel 1, and then continues to reel 2 and then reel 2.

Scatter symbols, on the other hand, can be anywhere on the reels to count as a winning combination. You can have a 2 symbol scatter combination on reel 2 and reel, or a 3 symbol scatter combination can be on reel 2, reel 3, and reel 5.

Scatter symbols are not tied to a pay line

You can completely forget the concept of pay line when it comes to scatter symbols. They do not need to land on pay lines to count as a combination.

Scatter symbols can be anywhere in view to count as a win

As long as you can see scatters on the reels regardless of the position on the reel or the reel that the scatters are on, this will count as a combination win.

On some slots, scatter symbol combinations will pay out for as few as 2 on the reels; while, on others, the minimum is 3 symbols. For the most part, this means you will be paid for 2, 3, 4 or 5 scatters on the reels or 3, 4, or 5 scatters on the reels. It really depends on the slot that you are playing.

Scatter symbols pay multiples of your entire spin bet

Most scatter symbols pay multiples of your entire spin bet. This is because this style of symbol is not tied to a pay line, so the slot cannot pay you according to the amount you have wagered on a pay line.

To get around this, it makes perfect sense that scatter symbol combinations will pay out multiples of your entire spin bet.

  • Example of scatter symbol payouts:
  • 2 Scatter symbols = x2
  • 3 Scatter symbols = x5
  • 4 Scatter symbols = x20
  • 5 Scatter symbols = x100

You can see that each payout here is the multiple that will be applied to your entire spin bet should the scatter land on the reels.

If your entire spin bet is 40 MYR, and you land a 2 symbol scatter combo, then you will be paid 80 MYR x2 effectively doubling your money.

  • Example of payouts for a total spin bet of 40 MYR:
  • 2 Scatter symbols = x2 (80 MYR Payout)
  • 3 Scatter symbols = x5 (200 MYR Payout)
  • 4 Scatter symbols = x20 (800 MYR Payout)
  • 5 Scatter symbols = x100 (4,000 MYR Payout)

As you can see, a 5 symbol scatter combination can be very lucrative with a huge 4,000 MYR if you have bet a total of 40 MYR across all lines.

*Note: Your total spin bet is the amount you bet across all lines, and not the amount you bet per line

Scatter symbols can be used to trigger a bonus or free spins round

Another use for the scatter symbol is to use it as a bonus round symbol. The same rules apply to the way the scatter symbol counts as a combination, but instead, it will launch a bonus round or free spins round rather than pay multipliers of your spin bet.

On many slots, such as slots from Microgaming, you will find that the slot pays out both multipliers of your spin bet and the slot will also launch the bonus round or free spins round after. The minimum number of scatter symbols required for the bonus round or free spins round to launch is x3 scatter symbols; while, the 2 symbol combination will only pay out a multiplier of your spin bet.

Scatter symbols can also help decide how many free spins you will get, or how far you will progress in the bonus round.

  • Example of the number of free spins won according to scatter symbols:
  • 3 Scatter symbols = 5 Free Spins
  • 4 Scatter symbols = 8 Free Spins
  • 5 Scatter symbols = 15 Free Spins

Scatter symbols are also useful in free spins rounds to retrigger the free spins bonus. Landing more scatter symbol combinations will add more free spins to your free spins round. On some slots, you will also be paid out the scatter multiplier again; however, some slots will only award additional free spins should the scatter symbol combination be retriggered during a free spins round.

Rounding Up Scatter Symbols

Scatter symbols are by far the most useful symbol combination on a slot. They pay out very often and the fact that they can pay out multipliers of your spin bet, launch bonus rounds as well as trigger free spins makes them an important addition to any slot.

Many people will only play on slots that have scatter symbols, which for the most part is 99% of slots that come with scatters. It is very rare to find a slot machine that does not have some kind of scatter symbol award on its pay table.
